I absolutely love Fall.  It is my all time favorite season.  Fall is perplexing to me because, even though it is the time of year when everything seems to change and even die, the colors are stunningly beautiful.  Fall always reminds me that there is mysterious beauty in the reality of change; as sure as Fall brings changing colors and Winter freezes the world over, the hope of new growth is not in vain because Spring is sure to come.  This was painted in the effort to look closely at a leaf when the green chlorophyll begins to disappear.  It's a beautiful and amazing phenomenon that always reminds me of purpose that exists in the changing seasons of life.

This is also an experimental piece that carefully encompasses primary colors.  I wanted to create something that used primary colors that didn't seem juvenile.  Using vibrant primaries with a focus on the warm side of the color wheel, this piece seems to really look like it's glowing.

Stretching over 10 feet wide, this piece makes a beautiful statement in any room.

After a time period of muted and Fall-ish colors,  I decided to pursue more vibrant colors. Reminiscent of orange sherbet and bubbles, when looking at this piece it is hard not to feel like a kid again.  I wanted to encompass everything happy,  like the feeling a child gets at a birthday party.  

This piece is celebratory in nature.  From the vibrant colors to the splashes and spills, its purpose is to promote happiness.  The pink and orange are mixed with gesso making it much like the texture of icing on a birthday cake.  It brings to my mind the sweet smell of my grandmother's famous orange cream cake she makes every christmas,  a happy memory indeed!

Since I am a musician and love music, I will share the following tidbit with you.  Apart from the obvious, the name of this piece was slightly derived from the REM song, "Orange Crush".

This painting represents the reality of something supernatural that can calm the existence of turmoil: Peace.  Peace, as a better existence,  can melt over the harshest of turmoil, like healing aloe to a deep wound.  

I've always been drawn to pink and purple color palettes.  I suppose some of that stems from the fact that, when we were young, my sister liked pink and I liked purple.  I guess the subconscious choice of pink and purple actually came from a place in my mind that represents good thoughts and memories as a child.  Those colors that represent good memories balance out the reality of pain that existed in my life later.   I wanted to create very harsh movement in the back ground almost like sword slashes, and cover it with vertical soothing drips.  There are two realities represented here; Pain and Peace.  I hate one and love the other, but they seem to be inseparable.  I would not have known such great Peace if I had not known such great Pain. Somehow, Pain seems to carve out the way for Peace.

This piece was just for fun really.  It started out as a drip experiment toying with warm and cool colors.  It quickly became one of my favorites because of its color and movement.  Looking at it always takes my mind to a happy place.  As the cool colors are represented below and the warm colors up top, I naturally saw what looks like a blazing sun setting upon the cool waves of the sea.

Flying has always been a dream of mine.  I used to literally dream that I could fly high above all my troubles, but now I know that I can never fully avoid harsh circumstances.  In reality, the unavoidability of pain, along with the existence of a sovereign God who works pain somehow for my good, is what gives me freedom to fly.  

I wanted this painting to represent movement and turmoil.  The dark flight path is embellished with real shiny copper leaf.  This was done with great purpose to represent beauty and light in a dark path.

I love Autumn and pink, so this piece only seemed natural.

I hung it sideways just to be a little less like a typical drip painting style.  Now it seems as if the wind is blowing melted ice-cream to the west.

No real spiritual meaning other than just the existence of happiness and mystery.

I often like to view life and the passing of time as a series of photographs.  Looking back to our memories is often like looking through a photo album.  This piece represents life as quick snapshots that seem to change with just a glance.  I grew up in a house that set back in the woods and I have fond memories of playing in huge piles of leaves in our freshly raked yard.  So, I think that had an influence on the style and moment of my brushstrokes in this piece.

I relied heavily on purple and green because they automatically provide visual stimulation as opposites in the color wheel, but I also couldn't resist adding flecks of primary colors for unexpected visual depth.  This piece represents mystery and purpose in the existence of our memories.  As time quickly passes us by, the past becomes just a series of glances.

I don't quite know why I painted this one.  I suppose that my love for the glowing rocks in the movie, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, have made quite an impression on me.  I thought it was cool how, when the rocks got closer to one another, they began to glow.  Subconsciously, those mysterious rocks must have influenced the deeper meaning behind this piece: that authentic community with other people is what we really need.  When we are alone we grow cold, but when we are together...we glow.

The primary color palette was used in the effort to make it less juvenile, but in the end this really tends to look like glowing jelly bellies being tossed in the air.  I don't really like jelly bellies, but this painting always makes me want some! ha.
